George plays the role of Community Engagement/Outreach Lead at Black Youth Connect (BYC). In his numerous experiences working with youth, George brought a unique style to BYC with his spontaneous approach to leadership. George graduated with a Double Major in Psychology and Criminology at Western University and currently pursuing a Master's in Psychotherapy. George aspires to foster an organization that looks to develop the next generation of Black excellence (stars). When Gloria moved to Canada 8 years ago, she relied on youth groups and community organizations for integration and adjustment to the Canadian system. Gloria was hired by Mosaic church in 2016 to design a mentorship program that encouraged young marginalised girls in North East London to express their creativity, discover talents and inspire them to become leaders in their community. Throughout this program and her own experience as a young African immigrant, it became clear to her that youth in the Black/African community in London Ontario needed mentorship programs, a safe space and a supportive community. Gloria has been facilitating weekly sessions, managing social media and coordinating finances for Black Youth Connect since summer 2020. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in financial economics at the university of Western Ontario in 2020 and is currently working at a financial institution. She believes that every black youth in London, Ontario has the ability to reach their full potential when they are surrounded by a strong, supportive and safe community. This is especially true due to the lack of access to mentorship and resources she and many others felt as Black youth during a transitional period in high school. Over the past year in her role as social media manager and sessions facilitator she has seen how community engagement and cultivating leadership has made a difference in the lives of Black youth. Although she had positive experiences in community centres and daycamps growing up, she always looked for spaces where she could feel safer and more supported in a city which often reminded her and her Black peers that they don’t quite fit in. Lily joined Black Youth Connect in 2022, and in her role as the Community Outreach Facilitator and Administrative Assistant she has witnessed the impact of building self-confidence and community in the Black youth we serve through our programming.
